A Helping Hand
Registered in March 22nd 2021 in response to the hunger crisis caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, Free Food Society (FFS) started giving food aid to communities in need, irrespective of race, creed and religion. The Society was established by a group of individuals who came together out of concern for the increasing number of people who lost their livelihoods following the pandemic.
Post-pandemic, when economic sectors reopened and people found jobs, appeals for food aid reduced, but there will always be pockets of people still in need and FFS continues to help. Although people started getting jobs, there is an urgent need to help communities out of poverty in a more sustainable manner. Recognising this, FFS selected one B40 community to work with in PPR Desa Rejang, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. The community was selected based on its multiracial composition, its very low income and the large number of school-going children within it. A strategy was developed to help this community with food aid and a tuition program for their children. Since its implementation in mid-2023, this strategy has shown impressive results.
In January 2026, FFS received its tax-exempt status under Subsection 44(6) of the Income Tax Act 1967 and henceforth, monetary donations to FFS qualify for Tax Exemption Receipts.
